Insia (Zaira Wasim) shines again after her portrayal as young Geeta Phogat in Dangal) has an unflinching passion to become a singer, but being in a conservative Muslim family and having a strict upbringing, her father straightaway opposes to her decision. Later, with the support from her mother and Bollywood music director Shakti Kumar (the cheesiest character ever played by Aamir Khan) she finally manages to grab on to the dreams she has been chasing. Insia here represents every other girl child who are constantly subdued by their families and, depicting her victory over the society have inflicted the much-needed spark into many young souls; encouraging them to let go of the fear. hindi films

Imagine yourself trapped in a 1BHK flat, with no resource of food and water, no electricity and most importantly – your cell phone is switched off due to dead battery. To what lengths would you go to make yourself out of the place? Rajkummar Rao’s character, a musophobic and vegetarian Shaurya deals with similar troubles he couldn’t have dreamt of in his wildest dreams. His struggle to cry out for help in the claustrophobic place manages to terrify the audience, making it one of the strongest thrillers this year. The primary takeaway is that, Rao single-handedly manages to cruise the hundred minutes of the film with his compelling and persuasive acting. hindi films

Konkona Sen Sharma makes into the list again – this time as a director. The debutante directs her father Mukul Sharma’s short story of the same name, which according to the film is ‘inspired by true events’. Set in the late 70s, when a family visits McCluskieganj for a refreshing vacation, things get out of hand which lead to unforeseen circumstances. The mammoth cast includes Kalki Koechlin, Vikrant Massey, Gulshan Devaiya, Ranvir Shorey, Om Puri, Tillotama Shome, Tanuja, Jim Sarbh, Arya Sharma (brilliant as the nine-year-old Tani) and Aparna Sen (who briefly appears in a voice-over role as Shutu’s mother). Vikrant Massey, who plays Shutu – a character we’ve all been at a certain point of our life, stands out from the lot. Special credit goes to cinematographer Sirsha Ray, for his colorful and lively stills throughout the film. hindi films

2. Lipstick Under My Burkha

A tale of four women – divided by religion, united by pain and harassment. It does not come as a surprise that CBFC had enough grounds to create a hassle during the film’s release. Director Alankrita Srivastava depicts every little detail which remains sealed behind closed doors, where we see husband’s aggression translating into marital rape; fantasizing about Miley Cyrus while being in a strict conventional Muslim family; satisfying sexual cravings, albeit beside a running tap to fade out the moans. Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur steal the show with their portrayals of the four protagonists. The borderline between fear and desire is what makes this movie so surreal

1. Mukti Bhawan

hindi films 2

Hands down, the best Hindi movie of 2017. The story revolves around an elderly Dayanand, who checks in the titular place after a dream makes him realize his time has come. The very thought of knowing when one is going to die is absolutely frightening and sends chills down the spine. As the movie progresses, we get to know not every one of them has the same fate; we are introduced to a certain Vimla Devi, who has been staring into death for the past 18 years. Award-winning performances from Lalit Behl, the aged protagonist and Adil Hussain, who plays the dubious son Rajiv rightfully etches this movie into the long list of Hindi classics.
